with Hypnosis

Have a drinking problem? Want to cut down?  Want to stop? Having trouble?

Willpower alone might not be enough. But for many, hypnosis is the answer they were looking for – whether in conjunction with traditional therapy or some other program. Here are just a few of the problems that have motivated my clients to decide to moderate their drinking:

  • Relationship or marriage problems
  • Work problems
  • Legal problems including DWI/DUI
  • Low motivation
  • Guilt and shame
  • Health problems

Moderation may work fine for you, but it is possible that the habit of drinking has moved from a mere habit to a more serious problem. Conventional wisdom is that there as an invisible line that separates the alcoholic from the heavy drinker. And once that line is crossed total abstinence is the only possible solution.

And many drinkers who experience some of these problems are simply not ready or willing to give up drinking entirely. Moderation is their goal. But moderation can be tricky.

After all, you have probably built up a lifetime habit of occasional, or even regular, heavy drinking or you wouldn’t be reading this page. As a result, your willpower alone may not be enough to get your drinking back to where you want it. Hypnosis can help because hypnosis goes beyond willpower to effect your subconscious mind which is where habits are made and can be broken.

Hypnosis can help you control your drinking better by helping you to:

  • Establish limits you will stick to
  • Space your drinks
  • Slow your drinking
  • Think about drinking less often
  • Deal with problems instead of trying to drink them away
  • Be honest with yourself about your drinking
  • And – most important – begin to deal with the underlying issues that contribute to your drinking problem

There are a number of specific advantages to this approach for many people:

  • No groups – not affiliated with AA – unless you choose to seek additional help.
  • No sharing personal information if you choose not to
  • 100% private and confidential
  • Doesn’t matter how much or how often you drink. We will start with where you are – though I will refer you to licensed professionals if a reasonable person would judge you as a chronic alcoholic or addict.

Plus you will find hypnosis is pleasurable, relaxing and an interesting new experience. If it turns out you decide to quit drinking alcohol completely, hypnosis can help with that too. I work with many clients who are successful in 12-step programs, Smart Recovery or traditional therapies if that is the route you eventually choose.

I recommend you start with at least two – three hypnosis sessions. This will give us a chance to talk about your particular situation so I can adjust the hypnosis accordingly. Further sessions may be necessary depending on your needs.

Here are a few comments from a couple of recent clients:

…my drinking had gotten way out of hand…
“Dear John, As you know my drinking had gotten way out of hand. It was affecting my business and personal life, maybe even my health. I have been following the program we worked out of a maximum of four glasses of wine a day and am pleased to report that I have never gone beyond this. In fact, some days I have only had one glass and occasionally none at all. My wife is thrilled at the change and so am I. I am enjoying my wine just fine and am happy that I don't have to give it up entirely. Thanks for your wonderful help. Regards, John T. (Providence, RI)”

Drinking only on weekends
“Dear John, I have been able to keep to drinking only on weekends or when I am out with my husband for three months now. This is terrific. I understand that if I can't make this work I will have to consider total abstinence and that (combined with your obvious understanding and talent) is what I think is giving me an added incentive. So far so good and it has been much easier than I thought, no cravings. Horray. Janet B. (Rehobeth, MA)”

John talked me out of controlled drinking…
“John talked me out of trying "controlled drinking" and convinced me it was time to get serious about my drinking problem. And yet he did it in the most gentle way that I didn't even realize it was happening.  For that I will be forever grateful. Three hypnosis sessions and I am now over 6 months sober and feel alive again. He changed my life. What more need I say? Maureen K, Westerly, RI”

Do you consider yourself a genuine alcoholic suffering from the disease of alcoholism?

Please note:  If you have crossed that “invisible line” with your drinking and consider yourself a true alcoholic, I will suggest that you see a licensed addiction therapist for and also consider a total abstinence program such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Smart Recovery but I won’t push it. I will be very happy to help you use hypnosis to support your efforts to make a program like this work and have supported many alcoholics to do just that. Please understand that I am not a licensed addiction counselor and not qualified to diagnosis or treat a genuine addiction but am more than happy to work as part of your support team.
